Should A Christian Observe Halloween?
Posted by Rey
Years ago someone from my old church handed me a Chick tract on the “true meaning” of Halloween; it scared me (and it scared Joe Carterlet him link to it). Mind you, I saw The Exorcist when I was eight and the Lord saved me two weeks latereven so, Chick scared me. But as I grew older I came to see that many of the things Chick said were not sound and with Halloween specifically I had to draw (sorry) my own conclusions. After all, if I was to be a husband and a father I would have to have some solid convictions to share with the family. So should a Christian observe Halloween?Links N’ Junk 16

- Blogspotting. A father of an autistic child writes about his son and life; excellent. Probably one of the most powerful self-portraits Iâve ever seen too. Angry bloggers blog about downed blog service.
- Fight The Man. Battlestar Galacticaâs ratings are taking a hit even though the show is fantastic. You can come up with 101 technological reasons why, but even so Iâm writing NBC/Sci-Fi so they donât pull the same junk they did with SG-1.
- Commercial. This Messinâ With Sasquatch commercial is one of the best.
- TV. Awesome online TV goodness (HT: MCF). Excellent show highlighting how Christianity shaped the world by looking back at history; Drive Thru History (HT: The Greek)
- Web. Hereâs some handy web script sites. DynamicDrive, Hotscripts, PHPresource, CGIResource, HyperGurl
- Bots. Weâve all seen the Land Walker (and by now know that itâs being made-to-order) but I still think thereâs some serious Battlefield potential with the robot suit.
- iLife. And Man said âLet there be MP3 playersâ and he formed a cross-shaped one. (HT: Gizmodo and technically not Apple iLife related)
- McPheever. Pix of American Idolâs number one gal, Katharine McPhee.
- Star Wars. Original Auditions, ânuff said.

MCF: thats not really a documentary, you knowRey: mockumentary?
MCF: yeah
Rey: yeah, equally annoying.
MCF: with all these cartoon voice actors
MCF: and cameos like Bruce Campbell and Marc Hammil
Rey: yeah, not sold
Rey: dan would say “snoresville.”
MCF: dan likes low budget horror movies and hates anything with tom hanks
Rey: i wasn’t quoting his taste; i was quoting his words
Rey: what he would say not his analysis
MCF: but you’re a star wars and comic book geek you’ve been to conventions and watched mad cartoons!
Rey: are you trying to get me to quit netflix?
MCF: wow, what is GOING ON with me this week?!?!
Rey: ::copy::paste::post::
references: killed a story, killed a conversation, almost killed a blog, probably will kill some kids.
updated
MCF: hamill’s not a cameo, he’s the host
Rey: afraid you’ll look stupid?
MCF: yes
Rey: want me to edit it?
MCF: it would be more accurate. Maybe if you include the other cameos like Matt Groening though that might make me sound geekier and more obscure.

- Myspace. Here a great video by Da Kings of MySpace. (View the video first).
- Idiocy. Richard Dawkins (vocal atheist) says itâs better that being raised Christian is worse than being sexually molested as a child.
- Tek. Falconâs Hypersonic Jet to fly in 2008; looks suspiciously like mini-streamlined Imperial Star Destroyer.
- Celebs. Tyra Banks goes coo-coo for Vaseline. Yeah, just watch it all the way through.
- Blogspotting. Jeremy has an excellent series on Theories of Knowledge and Reality. Iâve linked to it before on the Bible Archive but some of this audience might want to check it out. Mark has a fantastic series on the Church.
- CSS. Might have to permalink this oneâit puts all the CSS Gallery sites in one locale: CSS Showcase.
- Kewl. Going on a plane? Wanna know which seat is the best in the house? (Void when flying Oceanic).
- Wonder Woman. Who looks the part? Vote on my poll.
Story Hopping: Chapter 1

Let’s write a story; hereâs how you play: (1)Read my introduction. (2)Write the following paragraph to develop the story. (3) Drop a comment saying you did it either here or in your blog so others can follow your paragraph (4) Donât lose track of the details. (5) When I put the next section up I’ll compile the ones that have been posted (with trackbacks to your site) and then we can continue from there.
Thatâs it. The goal is to flesh out the character and start developing a plot thread across a few blogs and flexing some creative muscle. Just like any book, everything isnât packed into one paragraph but flows from word to chapter to paragraph. Feel free to play.

Next piece. Lock. Turn. Lock.
Alex had been putting It together for too long and It was now starting to become a burden.
Twist. Flip. Lock.
It constantly weighed on the mind, pulling, begging, asking to fulfill Its purpose. It wanted to start.

Jericho: Frightening & Disturbing
Posted by Rey
A small town comes to a standstill when cell phones black out and a mushroom cloud blossoms in the horizon. Cops scurry to find old giger counters wondering what happened. Thus Jericho begins itâs eerily realistic painting of a near-apocalyptic society.
Chaos ensues as a school bus goes missing, the people of Jericho canât get in contact with the outside world and finally, over-taxed powerlines shut off leaving the small town literally in the dark. The darkest moment in the show had to be the teen replaying a message from his parents saying that they would remain in the city an extra day, then âwhatâs thatâ followed by the sound of a bomb and shattering glass before a cut off dial tone.
The most frightening moment is when that same teen shares the tape with other towns people. His neighbor hugs him, lending him a shoulder to cry on âI didnât know they were in Denver.â
âThey werenât in Denver. They were in Atlanta.â
The next episodes are a nightmare’s blur: A young woman who didn’t see the explosion and is driving at night stops her strangely bumpy ride to discover hundreds of dead birds all over the ground. A cop from St. Lois knows a bit too much about nuclear bombs and spends hours creating a false identity for his family. The town tries to survive the first rainfall of nuclear fallout realizing that no one prepared for this. A staticky television broadcast comes through showing a Mandarin speaker and a map of the US with several radial circles. Scattered reports of tanks are filtered to the town folk. A black box from one of the hundreds of planes that were up in the air during the incident holds conversations between pilots discussing their options on emergency landings and witnessing fighter jets fly by them.
The show is horrifying, mysterious, character focused and poignant.
Autism, Television and A Christian’s Responsibility

Mohler (HT: Tim–>Links Below) tells parents to be careful with television and children by first showing an excerpt from recent research showing a statistical relationship with autism and television viewing. People, donât get me wrongâkids shouldnât be spending hours in front of the TV, but honestlyâChristians, just because you read a bit of research donât immediately wave it as your banner!Heroes: Wow

Okay, the Cheerleader/Supergirl is still my fave but Hiro went up some MAJOR points after this weeks episode. Who is your favorite and why? If there are comments there will be spoilers. The Totally Def Music From the 80’s

I listened to a lot of generally acknowledged junk in the 80s. So if Janet had asked âwhat generally acknowledged junk did you listen toâ I could start rattling off names from the Kids music station (I still remember the words to Weird Alâs â Another One Rides the Busâ).
