Toward Criticism of Christian “Art”

I’ve been critical of what is usually perceived nowadays as being Christian art. Recently, I got into a conversation where some folk were defending the validity of this or that style of art and stating, quite emphatically, what right do I have to preside judgment over them (citing the Most Well Known Verse of the 21st Century: Matthew 7:1). I’ve given it some serious thought, and I think that not only do I have to be critical (in the classic sense) of such art: we all, especially Christians, should.

Rey’s Wisdom: Mathematical Constant

I’m not a wise man; I’m fairly an idiot in a lot of things. But I’ve learned that wisdom is generated by experience and I have 35 years of that last bit which allows me to learn Something. That being the case, I’ll share it with you after the jump.

Extremely Right (Or Left)

Did you catch the leaked unclassified Home Land Security report on Right-Wing Extremists? I think the hoopla (especially in the blogosphere) was a bit over the top considering the language in the document.

Laws of E-Debate

Many years ago, so the story goes, Newton was bopped on the head by a falling apple and immediately came up with several Laws of Physics. On the Internet forum I participate in, I have been verbally bopped enough times to unearth the Laws Of E-Debate which are just as foundational to any Laws of Thermodynamics and probably just as provable. Maybe on your jaunts through message forums and online debates you will find these Laws coming to the fore.

Now what you may find is that these Laws might have some proper applicability in some scenarios—yet you may also realize that sometimes, they’re just embarrassing refusals to engage the opposing position properly.

The Resurrection And Me

Every Easter, the History Channel (or the Discovery Channel, PBS, NBC, et. al….) runs a program looking over hot Christian topics: the historicity of the books of the Bible; the myths of Jesus having a family after the crucifixion; stories about where Jesus’ body might be found. The same thing happens around Christmas. Sure it’s all for ratings but what they’re attacking makes sense to me.

Keepin’ It Real

Reality Filming has a long, sordid history and in recent years it has both blessed and threatened the television and movie industry. Reality TV, for example—and with no judgment on my part—has given us American Idol, Survivor, Jerry Springer, Cops and PBS’s Manor House. Some of these shows have managed to dethrone traditional television dramas like Firefly (and possibly even the recent Dollhouse, or so the Rumors whisper). Film wise, reality has given us quite a number of stories but in recent years they have started following the fame of Reality Television with the likes of Borat which might be funny in the short term but there’s no real substance to them; they’re really just a recording of how people react in certain situations.

Oats, How I Hate Thee: Facts and Failures

I’ve still been doing this thing; I’m trying to persevere. As I have done so there have been some days that I fell into a rut with something that I found bearable and other days that I summoned something Awful onto my breakfast table. Here’s  a basic overview.
