These kinds of stories pop up now and then, and this kind of claim is probably as old as Christianity itself. C.S. Lewis thought of the myths of a dying-resurrected messiah as "strange dreams" that preceded the real thing in the form of Christ himself. Lewis saw these myths merely as proof that the template for understanding how we'd receive Salvation was universal and subconscious. Part of what makes Christianity distinct from the death-resurrection myths that preceded it is the journalism-like quality of the Gospels. They weren't written with the romantic, fable-like quality of the death-resurrection stories that came before. Nor were they written in the manner of their contemporary Hebrew religious texts. Rather, they're written with an urgency, clearly intent on relaying information about important, fairly recent events.

Or, as Lewis sums up, Christ was the myth made flesh; made real. The template, the universal Truth, in the form of a man.

The media will tire of this story soon and move on to another dramatic account of some "newly discovered" gnostic "gospel" that disproves Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They just never get tired of making these old heresies new again!

My thoughts exactly when I read this article. Who cares if the idea of a resurrected man was already in circulation at the time? It still makes it quite extraordinary when someone pulls it off.
