Sy’s Essays

Every now and then my Son does something that gets him in trouble, usually on account of him being insanely hyperactive while being on the verge of a migraine. At these times I try to find a way to both calm him down and redirect his energies.

Usually this consists of me telling him to sit down, stare at a wall for five minutes and then followed by a brief writing session. In the session he has to write down five sentences that tell me something about the wall—and they can’t be mere facts. They must be creative in their formulation, else he has to examine the wall some more.

Yeah, I know; it sounds crazy. Welcome to the world with Me as Dad. Here’s his most recent two sessions followed by a short essay on why he loves Summer that he wrote in Winter.

Session 1: The wall is so bad. When I look at it, it destroys my mind. When I look at it, I know what it’s thinking. It is waiting to give me a headache with its weapon (its color). If I look at it for 25 minutes I WILL get a headache.

Session 2: The wall is the color Moans Dust. There is bump patterns with scratches. It is not fun to draw it. It only has outlets on it. It should be blue.

Summer: There are so many things about summer that I love. First of all I have vacation. That means I can play whenever. 2nd of all I go on trips like the beach. I love trips because its comfy in my carseat. Finally I love the dark nights. I can watch stars then. I cannot wait till next summer.

  1. “When I look at it, it destroys my mind.” Ha ha…your son is so much smarter than I am…and he’s 8. I think if you gave me that assignment I would still be staring at the wall…probably starting to cry…
