As a designer I find that sometimes I get really snooty about things that deal with color and structure even if it’s an area that I know very little about. I may not have that certain finesse to thematically tie a room together, but I’ll tell you what colors look right on the walls. That being the case, I’m going to post some info on makeup.
Admittedly, I don’t wear makeup. But I find that when I’m in the supermarket I look across the register and think “Man, she should not be wearing that color with eyes like that” or “Why would she tattoo her eyeliner on?!?”
There are a couple of pretty nice sites that do a great job of matching makeup with skin tone and eye color. I’d recommend anyone who’s looking to do this sort of thing to sign up to Clinique’s site and put in their skin information, then follow the process by going over to The Beauty Den where you can read some very helpful information with loads of charts. Check out what Anna Lyn C. Sibal says about eye makeup:
The trick with eye makeup is putting on a neutral base–either taupe, beige, light brown or ivory–over the lid before applying any color. After the base is in place, accent color using shadows and eyeliners should then be applied to define the eyes. The accent color should match or be complementary to the color of your eyes. Afterwards, cap your eye makeup with mascara.
Also, for those more graphically inclined, you can use online graphic designer tools like Color Blender or Color SynthAxis. Use the sliders to select your skin tone and look at the colors that reside in the same school. Of course, it will make ordering colors really hard since you can’t differentiate the HEX code or RGB values of makeup in the Real World, so maybe you’d be interesting in using EZFace.com.
Have fun.
