How I Met Your Mother and Burgers: The Marshall Burger Speech

How I Met Your Mother is probably one of the funniest sitcoms on TV today standing happily next to 30 Rock. It intelligently delves into a wide range of references without overtly giving the credit to the reference making it funny on two enjoyable levels.

Look at this speech, lifted straight from the 1984 Amadeus but retrofitted for the story. My French probably has to be has been fixed (HT: Marshall Erickson himself!):

Just a Burger? Just a burger. Robin, it’s so much more than “just a burger”. I mean…that first bite—oh what heaven that first bite is! The bun like a sesame freckled breast of an angel resting gently on the ketchup and mustard below—flavors mingling in a seductive pas-de-deux And then…a pickle…the most playful little pickle! Then a slice of tomato, a leaf of lettuce and a…a patty of ground beef so exquisite; swirling in your mouth breaking apart and combining again in a fugue of sweets and savor so delightful. This is no mere sandwich of grilled meat and toasted bread, Robin: this is God…speaking to us in food.

Here’s the original:

Extraordinary! On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse – bassoons and basset horns – like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly – high above it – an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I’d never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.

  1. That speech was awesome, as was his delivery, even the hint of the accent he put in. I should have realized where it came from. I watched it after midnight last night and was so close to running out for a burger after that, lol. :)

So, no Chuck season opener thoughts to go along with your other season premiere reviews?

  2. That is a completely different post, probably some time tonight or tomorrow. I was away this weekend and got in Yesterday noon so I had a lot of watching.

  3. …and now you’ll need a post for Pushing Daisies as well. I think I’m going to have to rely on Television Without Pity for my reviews. ;-)

  4. At this rate, I think I may just compile them. I have eight (!) season openers written so far in a single document and I still have a couple of things to add!

  5. It’s pas de deux which is a dance duet in ballet not pas du tout which means “not at all”

  6. It’s funny because I had just watched Amadeus before watching this episode. It was freaking hilarious.
