2009 Season Openers

Season Openers of 24, Lost, Battlestar and American Idol with spoilers to boot.

Twenty Four

Awesome season opener that doesn’t lead in from the movie very well although it ultimately deals with some main issues in the movie. We get to meet the future Mrs. Bauer (if she survives this season with an intact jugular or a bullet in her gullet after betraying the feds). I enjoy that CTU has been removed from the picture (so to speak—they’re a radical pseudo-political grass-roots anti-terrorism group) so that we get that original nervousness by being in a possibly corrupt agency. I love that Jack has a snazzy pouch that he’s been sporting and I love that Mrs. Bauer is embracing her inner Jack as the story progresses. I also think its interesting that Mrs. President sounds like Bush (even down to facial expressions) though she doesn’t look hokey. Best line in the season thus far had to be Chloe’s “I’m not an FBI Agent; I’m a stay-at-home-mom.” Good season opener with great cliff-hangers promising a fun fast-paced season even if later episodes featured some standing around and the same annoying clunky recaps (ie “Jack why did you shoot me and bury me alive?” when this just happened 15 minutes ago and she played along to stay alive)

Battlestar Galactica

Depressing. Utterly depressing. Now it was good, yes, but when the last Half-Season ended we were in dire straits. The Cylons and the Human Survivors had found Earth (?) that’s been decimated by nuclear explosions. We find out that the final Cylon was one of the two characters I had already thought as likely though I was sure it was Mr. Original Apollo but what are you gonna’ do. Everyone on the crew is going insane, Kara discovered that she’s been recreated (by God?) and Dee, after a lovely evening with her ex-husband, smiles and blows her brains out. After that uplifting episode, the following episode didn’t do much for our heart with Madam President giving up on her meds, Whiney-Gimp-Gaeta deciding to aid in the Revolution and Gaius Baltar no longer caring about God or humanity. Decent season opener with promising future but utterly depressing.

Lost

This was the biggie. Not only is the show moving faster now that we have an official ending time frame but they’re answering an absurd amount of questions while plunging viewers further down the rabbit hole. By this time everyone knows they’ve embraced the Time Travel story line (that they denied ever doing in the earlier seasons) but in a fantastic way. The Island is Lost in Time, Jack and his crew our Lost without the Island and Desmond is likely Losing his mind on account of his traveling. You gotta’ love Abrams. Everything about this season opener was great from Hurley’s mom wondering why there was a dead Iraqi on her couch and Ana Lucia (looking very feminine) pulling Hurley over and chastising him for his stupidity to John Locke talking to timeless Richard who has just handed him a Very Mysterious Compass.

“What is it?”

“A Compass, John.”

“What does it do?”

“It points North John.”

American Idol

Funny people trying to sing. Good looking new judge who has a (funny) penchant of breaking out in song with the people singing. That makes her exceedingly enjoyable to me.

  1. That kid with the guitar… his mother should have slapped him for all the world to see. Rotten little schmuck.

  2. “Whatever you do, DON’T get arrested.”

    I love meta commentary. :)

Clunky exposition has become a trademark of 24. “Chloe, recap the current situation for those that forgot over the commercial break!” “Well Bill, if Jack and Tony, who are both working undercover, don’t get Motobo, they won’t have the leverage to get to Candyman’s people!” They never could finesse that stuff in naturally.

BSG is depressing but it’s so ridiculously well done. Countless scenes that are at once repulsive and beautiful at the same time. I’m also starting to wonder if they aren’t ALL some form of Cylon, they just resurrect differently. In the case of the humans, it’s purely biological with genetic memory passed down to be accessed by some trigger(Watchtower). It wouldn’t explain Kara’s recreation right down to dogtags and ship though….chronal anomaly? They’re both her? Whatever it is, it even freaked out Leoben, which adds more impact to it. Good stuff.

What did you think of the Atlantis finale? I thought those last two episodes were better than most of the second half of the season, and got back a certain flavor that had been missing for a while now. Loved the music choices in the 2nd-to-last ep and the final ending had everything I’d logically hope to see in a finale. I won’t say more in case you haven’t seen them yet for some reason…

  3. B13: The kid with the guitar…LOL

MCF: totally forgot that I hadn’t posted on Atlantis. The last two episodes were flipping amazing and I just about almost applauded when Atlantis took on the Super Hive. Super props to all the characters doing the things they do best (like Shepherd flying a ship into the hive ship to destroy it from the inside…lol) but super props on Mr. Woolsey taking charge of the whole situation and getting super heroic at the helm. Loved Carter at the helm of the SGC even if its during Landry’s absence. Some of the best effects ever with the battle totally was awesome. Loved the Darts Kamikaze attack on Area-51 and I can’t wait for Atlantis movies. The closing shot of them looking out at the watery planet with the golden gate bridge was just classic.
