Kath & Kim: Fun and Likely Canceled

Spoilers after the jump.

Molly Shannon (Kath) plays a single mom who has her recently estranged and wildly ego-centric daughter Kim (Selma Blair) living with her during the extent of her so-called wildly public divorce.

Kim is obnoxious, focused on celebrities, totally into herself and ultimately clueless about everybody else’s needs–except with moments of insight between her and her mother.

The unlikely duo is surprisingly perfect with their interactions, their sudden shift of gears from Mother-Daughter to Best Friends.

Ultimately though, I think the show is doomed to failure. Selma Blair’s commentary on modern girls is so dead on that I doubt it’d get much steam with today’s current ego-centric generation. Molly Shannon’s portrayal of an older woman is so dead on that it actually makes her seems like the moms that some of these modern kids are avoiding.

So two thumbs up for this show with the woeful feeling that the show should be enjoyed while it lasts.

  1. I can’t get into it, as much as I love Selma Blair. The vibe I get in the 1-2 minutes before I fast forward to The Office is that it would probably work as a sketch, but doesn’t seem like something that could sustain an ongoing series.

  2. I know you refused to watch the nanny because a similar passing impression but you should really check out the show for an episode. It’s ridiculously smart and inevitably doomed.

  3. We can only hope it is cancelled because Selma is one heck of an actress in that sow. She is so annoying I can’t stand watching it. Molly Shannon not any better. Please cancel it.
